February 3, 2010 06:00 PM
Three former Florida men's college stand-outs have earned wildcards into the qualifying of the ATP Delray Beach International Tennis Championships by winning legs of the Delray Beach ITC "Survivor Series."

Former University of Miami star Eric Hechtman, Julien Carsuzaa of Lynn University's 2007 NCAA Division II national championship team, and former Florida Atlantic star Olivier Sajous earned qualifying wildcards by winning the Survivor I, II, and III legs respectively.

The 22-year-old Sajous won the last event by beating high school senior Chris Mengel of Pittsburgh 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the final, finishing atop the 73-player field.

"I was too excited in the first set but then I was able to calm down which helped my game mentally," said Sajou, a Plantation resident who originally hails from Haiti. "I worked very hard to get here and I'm looking forward to the tournament."

Sajous was the 2005 Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel High School Tennis Player of the Year after finishing a stellar career at Plantation High School, and compiled a 27-8 record at FAU.

The 18th annual Delray Beach ITC will be held Feb. 20-28, 2010, and also includes a first-time ATP Champions Tour event starring John McEnroe. McEnroe will join seven other tennis legends in the four-day round robin ATP Champions Tour event starting Feb. 20, with the final scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 23. The ATP World Tour matches with James Blake, Tommy Haas, defending singles champion Mardy Fish, Dimitri Tursunov and the defending doubles champion Bryan Brothers begins Monday, Feb. 22 with both the singles and doubles final scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 28.
