USTA Florida League Tennis Coordinator Memorialized with Norm Ott Invitational/Super 70s

 Norm Ott

Norm Ott was a people person, a collector of friends and acquaintances – whether it was teaching Mercury Seven astronauts to scuba dive as a member of the Navy Underwater Demolition Team, his years undercover with the CIA (those friends remain secret), leading Boy Scout troops in swims across the Bosporus Strait, or as a master USTA Florida local league tennis coordinator in the Tampa area, Ott was in the business of making new acquaintances and experiencing life.

"He was always the adventurous one," said his brother, Tom Ott, 77, speaking to the St. Petersburg Times last year after Ott’s death in March.

Ott’s wife, Ruth Ann, also a USTA Florida local league coordinator, will carry on the spirit of her husband with the Norm Ott Invitational Tournament for Super 70s teams (for players 70 years old), featuring three positions of doubles for men’s and women’s teams on March 5-7, 2010, at the Hunters Green Country Club in Tampa.

Participants by invitation for the tennis team event:
1. Teams in a local Super 70’s USTA league;
2. Teams organized without being in a Super 70’s league;
3. Or individuals may send their name, and if a team needs a player or players, info will be forwarded to existing team captains.

"Many of the past participating tournament teams have asked me to do the tournament and name it the Norm Ott Invitational," said Ruth Ann Ott. "That is what I am trying to do, and at this time I have 10 teams [registered] thus far. We are looking for another 6.0 women's team to play the girls from Bradenton, they are very anxious to play. The Invitational Super 70 tournament started in 2005 with Linda Kleitch as the tournament director and it was held in Naples. It was started because the USTA Florida Section had to make the decision of not having a Section Championship for the 70's leagues due to the low attendance, but we’re working to change that."
