Ponte Vedra QuickStart Tennis Workshop Open to the Public

February 16, 2010 06:00 PM
USTA Florida will hold a Recreational QuickStart Tennis Workshop, open to the public to learn the teaching techniques of QuickStart Tennis, on Saturday, March 20, 2010, from 1-4:30 p.m. at the Winston Family YMCA in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

The workshop is open to parents, volunteer coaches, tennis teachers, recreational coaches and anyone working with age 10-and-under youth in USTA Jr. Team Tennis/QuickStart, summer camps or after-school programs. Attendees will receive 3-1/2 hours of on-court training from a National QuickStart Tennis Specialist, QuickStart Tennis recreational practice plans specially designed for the 5-10 year old age group, and a participant manual.

"I attended the recreational workshop and I was amazed at how useful the information was that I received, including the tips, lessons, and materials," said Miguel S., a parent and past workshop attendee. "I have a daughter learning the game and I'm looking into coaching kids at a county park where paying for lessons is an issue."

Topics covered will include the QuickStart Tennis format of play, the six QuickStart variables all programs should adhere to, play situations and games, delivery of a recreational QuickStart practice, organizing and coaching a team match, characteristics of a good coach and the QuickStart Tennis court set-up.

QuickStart Tennis is the USTA's new official play format for 10-and-under children learning tennis, designed to bring kids into the game by utilizing smaller racquets and slower balls, shorter court dimensions and modified scoring, all tailored to age and size. QuickStart Tennis is divided into two different levels -- ages 8-and-under and ages 10-and-under.
