Sanford, Tallahassee, Winter Springs Represent Florida at Special Olympics Tennis

Six athletes will represent Florida at the 11th annual Special Olympics North America (SONA) National Invitational Tennis Championships presented by the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR), March 8-10, 2010, at PTR Headquarters in Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club on Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Florida athletes in the event are Brad Hines, Kierra Jefferson and Brittany Norman of Tallahassee; Brittany Tagliareni of Sanford; and Julie and Rebecca Wenzel of Winter Springs. The head coach of the Florida delegation will be Nancy Cook of Longwood, along with coaches Melba Jacobs and Connie Norman, both from Tallahassee.

The Special Olympics North America (SONA) National Invitational Tennis Championships attracts more than 100 Special Olympics athletes from as far away as Arizona, including Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Spectators are invited free of charge to the Opening Ceremony with the lighting of the Olympic torch on Monday, March 8 at 6 p.m. and Pro Exhibition match that immediately follows. The public is also welcome to watch the matches, which are scheduled for Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The medal presentations at the Closing Ceremony will be Wednesday afternoon, are also free to the public.
