Palm Beach "Share the Love" Charity Tennis Tournament in May

March 15, 2010 07:00 PM

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - March 16, 2010 -- The USTA Florida "Share the Love" Charity Tri-Level Team Tennis Tournament will be held on May 14-16, 2010, at the BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Three team divisions will be for teams of combined 3.0/3.5/4.0 players, teams of combined 3.5/4.0/4.5 players, and teams of combined 4.0/4.5/5.0 players. Teams can range in size from six to 12 players, and the play format will be round robin. The event is open to both teams and individuals, men and women, with a player's party, door prizes, awards and more, and a weekend getaway package for the team that raises the most money.

Proceeds from this tournament will benefit two charitable organizations: The USTA Florida Section Foundation assists charitable organizations throughout Florida in operating tennis programs for youth and special needs populations, along with building and renovating public tennis courts; and First Serve of the Palm Beaches provides opportunities for socio-economically disadvantaged youth to participate in tennis and education programs in the inner-cities of Palm Beach County.

First Serve of the Palm Beaches will utilize the funds provided from this tournament to establish a USTA Jr. Team Tennis "Player Opportunity Fund." This fund will assist children that are eligible for free lunch in the public school system with the financial means to participate in the USTA Jr. Team Tennis program, providing them with an opportunity to play tennis that would otherwise be financially prohibitive.

"Enabling children to play in a USTA Jr. Team Tennis league makes a real difference in their lives, socially and fitness-wise," says Sherry Beckman, executive director of The USTA Florida Section Foundation. "Tennis can change the life of a child, and we'd like to touch as many children as we can reach with this effort."

Each team entered will be required to raise a minimum donation of $500, in addition to the individual player registration of $25. The team that raises the most money will receive a grand prize of a weekend getaway (three rooms for the team) of two nights and three days at a location to be determined. Individuals may also enter and will be placed on a team. An individual entrant will be required to raise $50 plus the $25 registration fee.

The tournament is in conjunction with USTA Florida's "Share the Love" campaign, which is offering $500,000 in grants in 2010 to help fund tennis programs and projects throughout Florida communities during these challenging economic times. The Share the Love campaign is in addition to the funding that USTA Florida annually puts back into junior and adult tennis and community projects and programs. USTA Florida annually directs 90% of member dollars back into the community to support tennis programs and projects throughout Florida. Learn more at www.USTASharetheLove.com.
