USA Tennis Florida’s ACC Cup is a Winner!

March 18, 2004 04:08 PM
The ACC Cup’s All Star Cast

The Inaugural ACC Cup, which tested the best players from the East Coast and West Coast of Florida, earned a spot in the winner’s circle among great events in Florida. Starting as a mere brainchild of stalwart senior player Joe Bouquin to increase player participation, the ACC Cup came to fruition on March 13th and 14th at the Naples Bath and Tennis Club. The format was team style, where the 4 divisions of 45’s, 55’s, 65’s and 75’s played against their respective counterparts of the opposing coast.  Andy Gladstone of USA Tennis Florida commented “What could be better, world class tennis, a world class facility and a support staff that was second to none. It was an awesome weekend.” Adult Competitive Council Chairman Dan Casey was emphatic in stating how extraordinary the quality of play was. Dan Casey could not be anymore correct when world-class senior players like Mark Vines, Jeff Davis, Andres Molina, Clem Hopp, Geoff Moore and Rudy Hernando were just a few of the 40 great players competing.

A nail biter finish only added to this great event as it came down to the last 3 matches on Sunday afternoon.  The pulse of every player definitely quickened after hearing tournament director Pete Minarich state after the first 3 rounds “ We have a dead tie, every match counts.”

Special thanks go to past USA Tennis Florida President David Hall for his countless hours recruiting quality players and to Dan Casey for his relentless pursuit of excellence. Finally, special recognition goes to the gracious Naples Bath and Tennis Club and their all star cast of help including Tournament Director Pete Minarich, Manager Bill Cruse and Zahava  Abougzir.
