Sarmiento Runs Another Great Tourney With An All Star Cast At The State Men’s 70-85 State Closed

May 11, 2004 10:48 AM

l-r: Bob Threadgill, Champion 80s Singles & Al Sarmiento

Al Sarmiento, considered one of the finer tournament directors in Florida, was able to not only attract a high volume of players, but with fine quality as well. Highlighting the tournament was the Men’s 70 Division.  Super Senior expert Art Russo was proud to hear about the  draw size of 15 which included the top 10 players in Florida. Furthermore, the tournament was proud of having ITF World Champs King Van Nostrand in the70’s and Clem Hopp in the 75’s win their respective divisions. Other winners included Robert Threadgill in the 80’s Division and Irving Converse in the 85’s Division.

The tournament was further complemented by a great staff which included Jim Wormley of Sarasota Parks and Recreation, USTA Official Tom Cooke and Art Russo.

Results:
King Van Nostrand, Vero Beach won the M 70 S besting Robert Thompson, Boynton Beach 6-2, 6-1.
The M 70 S Consolation was won by Elvio Echart, Bradenton besting Phil Desilets, Sarasota 6-2, 6-3.
The M 70 D winners: William Herring, St. Pete, and Dave Rothgaber, Sarasota defeated Ian Schneider, Boca Raton, and Ron Tonidandel, Sarasota 6-4, 7-6 (9).
In the M 75 S our World Champion Clem Hopp Sarasota defeated Bill Gatlin, St. Pete 6-3, 6-1.
In the Consolation Finals M 75 S  Art Russo, Sun City Center defeated Bob Black, Aventura  6-2, 6-2.
In the M 75 D Bob Luxembourg, Sarasota, and Dan Luxenberg, Sarasota, won both of their matches in a round robin format to become the State Champions, defeating Clem Hopp and Jim Mackey by "walkover injury" after Mr. Hopp injured himself in the Finals of the Singles.
In the M 80 S finals Robert Threadgill, Maitland defeated Robert Klein, Naples 6-2, 6- 3.
In the M 80 D the Champions were Robert Klein, Naples and Val Orosz, Sarasota over Joseph Peel, Ft. Myers and David Brandt, Ft. Myers  6-2,2-6,6-1.
The M 85 S finals was won by Irving Converse Ft. Myers over Anthony Coker, Ft Myers 6-3, 6-2.
The M 90 S was cancelled, for lack of entries.

My thanks to Jim Wormley from the Sarasota Parks & Recreation and his staff, for making this one of the best State Closed tournaments ever.

It has been a pleasure to run this tournament and at the same time enjoy the quality of the matches under our USTA Official Referee Tom Cooke.

Special thanks to Art Russo for his help before, during, and after the tournament.
