GUNDERSON and HOPP to Represent US in Senior World Championships

USA Tennis Florida is honored to support Belmar Gunderson of Geneva, FL, and Clem Hopp of Sarasota, FL, as they represent the United States at the 2005 Senior World Championships in Antalya, Turkey at the Club Ale Bey Oct. 17-22.  Gunderson and Hopp were chosen by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to represent the US at the international competition.  Gunderson will play on the US Althea Gibson Cup Women’s 70 team and Hopp will compete on the US Bitsy Grant Cup Team for men 75 and over.

Gunderson has won numerous national doubles tennis titles, including the 2005 Hard and Grass.  After years on the professional tour, Gunderson brings a wealth of experience to this year’s team.  She has earned a place in the Northern Tennis Section Hall of Fame, the University of Minnesota Hall of Fame and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame.  Her passion, love of the game and enthusiasm draws players of all ages to improve and continue to compete and play tennis!

Hopp brings his own wealth of successful competitive tennis experience to this year’s squad.  He has been the top player in Florida the past seven years, he was ITF World Champion in 2003, is currently the top ranked player in the United States; and Hopp is ranked number three in the world.  Hopp is familiar with international tennis competition having represented the United States on the team last year.

Competing against the world’s top tennis teams, the United States will battle to win world championship titles they have won in the past.  This prestigious competition is sponsored annually by the International Tennis Federation (ITF,) and the US teams are sponsored by the USTA..

The United States Tennis Association owns and stages the US Open and selects the men’s and women’s teams that compete in major Davis Cup, Fed Cup, and Olympic Games competition. It also selects and sponsors top US players in various age groups for the USTA tennis teams that represent the US in international team tennis competitions against some of the world’s best players.
