Super Senior Players Selected to Represent USA in New Zealand

Eight Florida Super Senior Players to Compete on Grass and Hard Courts in November

Carol Clay, Judy Louie, Betty Wachob, Louise Russ, Lucille Kyvallos, Allan Carter, Rudy Hernando and Bill Tully have been selected to represent the USA on Cup teams in New Zealand from November 26-December 1st. These players will be competing against teams from around the world there in a senior version of Fed Cup and Davis Cup. They are selected by the USTA based on their tournament results and sportsmanship and are among the four best players in the USA in their age division. There are up to 20 countries competing in each age division.

Clay, Ft. Lauderdale, Louie, Ft. Lauderdale and California and Wachob, Panama City, will be three fourths of the Alice Marble Cup team for women 60 and over. Their event will be held on hard courts in Christchurch. Their fourth teammate is also the playing captain, Brenda Carter of Charleston, SC. 

Clay was a semifinalist at the national clay courts in singles and placed 5th in singles at the hard courts this year. For Clay it will be her second Cup team. She was a member of the winning Maureen Connolly Cup team in 2001 in Perth. She is also a member of the USTA Senior International Competition Committee and a two time Florida Senior Player of the Year.

 

 

 

 

Louie placed third at the clay courts and grass courts in singles and a finalist in doubles at both events. She also won the 60 indoor doubles title in August and the 60 clay court doubles title in 2006. Louie has been a part of several Cup teams including the 2005 Connolly Cup team which finished 2nd in Perth and the 2006 Marble Cup team which finished 5th in Turkey.

 

 

 

 

Wachob has had a stellar year in 2007, winning the 60 grass court singles title and finishing second at the clay courts and third at the hard courts. She won the 60 clay and hard  court doubles titles with Carter and was a finalist at the grass courts this year.   Wachob went undefeated at #2 singles on the 2006 Marble Cup team.

 

 

 

 

Kyvallos, Lauderdale by the Sea and Brooklyn, NY and Russ, Boca Raton, have been selected to the Queens Cup team for women 75 and over. They will be playing on natural grass in Christchurch. Their teammates are Mary Boswell, Damascus, MD (captain), and Suzanne Ryerson from Virginia. The Queens Cup finished 4th in 2007.

Kyvallos will be a first time member of a Cup team. She reached her first national final in 2007, beating two of the 2006 Queens Cup members en route to the final. She followed that up with a 4th place finish at the grass courts in July.  


 

 

 

 

Russ is a veteran of many cup teams, most recently the Queens Cup teams of 2004-6. She was the #1 player on all three teams and captained the team to wins in 2004-5. In 2007 she has partnered Mary Boswell to three national doubles title and is going for the fourth next week in Salinas, California. She was a finalist at the indoors in 75 singles and placed third at the clay courts and grass courts.  

 

 

 

Hernando, Ft. Lauderdale, and Carter, Boca Raton have been selected to the Britannia Cup team for men 65 and over. The Britannia Cup will be playing on hard courts in Ashburton. Their teammates are Fred Drilling, Bethesda, MD and Del Campbell, Dripping Springs, TX (Captain

Hernando won the 65 indoor doubles in 2006 and won the 65 hard court doubles in 2007. He was a grass court doubles finalist and a semifinalist in singles in 2006. He reached the semis of the singles and doubles earlier this month at the 65 grass courts. He was most recently a member of the Britannia Cup team in 2005.

 

 

 

 

Carter won the 65 singles at the hard courts in June and placed third at the 65 clay courts in April. He was a finalist in doubles at both events. He was a member of the 2006 Britannia Cup team which finished third.

 

 

 

 

 

Tully
has been selected to the Gardnar Mulloy Cup team for men 80 and over. The Mulloy Cup will be played on natural grass in Christchurch. His teammates are Graydon Nichols, Hanford, CA (captain), Tony Franco, Briarcliff Manor, NY and Roald Flater, Denver, CO. Tully has been on several cup teams, most recently the Bitsy Grant team in Austria. He was a grass and clay court doubles finalist in 2006 and repeated the feat in 2007. 

 

 

 

Clay, Louie, Kyvallos, Hernando and Tully are all members of the Lauderdale Tennis Club.
