Wachob Hopes to Lead U.S.Team to Victory

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has selected Betty Wachob of Panama City, FL to be a member of the U.S. Alice Marble Cup Team for women 60 and over. Wachob will compete with her team in this year’s international team competition on the red clay courts in Antalya, Turkey, Oct 12 -18, 2008. In the 2007 Marble Cup competition held in Christ Church, New Zealand, of which Wachob was also a member, the US took the Bronze medal and will be looking to claim the Gold this year.  Wachob is one of a 4 woman team selected by the USTA from the very best American players in her age division. Her teammates include Brenda Carter, Charleston, SC, Molly Hahn, Belmont, MA and Patricia Keleman, Bethelem, PA.

This event is sponsored annually by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and all member nations are eligible to field teams.

Mrs. Wachob has had a very distinguished tennis career.  Her accomplishments include doubles titles on grass in 2005 and 2006, on clay in 2007 and 2008, and on hardcourts in 2007 and 2008.  Her singles titles on grass in 2007 along with being the singles finalist on clay in 2007 and 2008 as well as a finalist on hardcourts in 2008 round out her accomplishments.  She represented the US on the Maria Bueno Cup team, for players 50 and older, in 1997 and 1998.

Wachob is a retired physical education teacher and has coached high school tennis teams for over 20 years. In 2007 and 2008, she was selected by USTA Florida as the Female Player of the Year. She enjoys playing tennis with her twin sister, JoAnn Sutter.
