Congratulations to the following USA teams of Maria Esther Bueno (W50), Maureen Connolly (W55), Queens' Cup (W75) and to the Bitsy Grant Cup (M75) for bringing home trophies from the Seniors and Super-Seniors World Team Championships in Atalya, Turkey.  More than 1,000 players representing 323 teams competed for 19 cups in the team championships.

The Maria Esther Bueno Cup (women’s 50) final featured the same two teams who had appeared in the previous two finals. The result was the same this year as in 2006 and 2007, with the top seeded USA defeating second seeds Australia. Susan Wright got the Americans off to a flying start with a straightforward win over Lyn Mortimer, 6-1, 6-2. Diane Fishburne (USA) then sealed the championship with a three-set victory over Ros Balodis 6-1, 6-7(7) 6-1, although not before Balodis had saved several match points in the second set to take it into a third.  Although the doubles team of Phylis Blackwell/Carolyn Nichols (USA) lost a tough match to Ros Balodis/Kaye Nealon 3-6, 2-6, USA had a great competition and once again, took home the trophy for the Americans.

There was another victory for the USA in the Queens’ Cup (women’s 75) as Team USA reclaimed the title they won every year from 2002-2005 with a 2-1 victory over Canada. Canada got off to a good start when Rosemarie Asch beat Lucille Kyvallos (USA) 6-4, 3-6, 4-6; however, Mary Boswell put the Americans back on track with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Muffie Grieve. The doubles was also one-way traffic as Boswell combined with Nancy Reed to register a straightforward 6-3, 6-1 win over Grieve and Huguette Fontaine.

Australia beat the USA in the Maureen Connolly Cup (women’s 55) three years in a row between 2002 and 2005. The Americans got their revenge today when they had a comprehensive 3-0 win over unseeded Australia in the most one-sided final of the day. Mary Ginnard beat Adrienne Avis 6-2, 6-2 for the loss of only four games, and Tina Karwasky lost one fewer against Kerry Ballard, winning 6-1, 6-2. Martha Downing and Kerry Young were equally impressive against Ballard and Helen Worland in the doubles, claiming a 6-1, 6-3 win to retain the title the USA won last year in Antalya.

The Bitsy Grant team upset the No. 1 seed of Team Canada with USA's John Powless defeating Canada's Lorne Main's in a dramatic victory.   Canada’s Lorne Main, the world No. 1 and multiple world champion, was handed his first defeat since June 2006 at the hands of John Powless in the battle of the No. 1s. The match couldn’t have been closer as Powless took the first set 7-5, Main won the second 7-6(6) in a tiebreak, and Powless edged the third 7-6(3), also in a tiebreak. No. 2 George McCabe defeated Ken Sinclair 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 and the doubles team of George McCabe/Paul Snyder defeated Les Bourne/Pierre Descoteaux 6-0, 6-0.

USA had multiple second, third and fourth place finishes against tough teams from around the country.  To view entire results, please visit www.itftennis.com/seniors and catch up on all the action from the prestigious event!
