December 1, 2008 03:05 PM

Carlos Gomez-Diaz of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. defeated Ramon Bernal of Woodbridge, Va., 5-4 in the finals of the One-On-One Doubles National Men's 35s Tournament held during the USTA National Men's 35s Clay Court Championships, Nov. 13-17 at the Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation, Fla.

The draw included 16 of the country's finest clay court players preparing for the National Singles and Doubles tournament held the same week. The tournament was played in a round-robin format up to the semifinals; all matches were first to win 5 games, no-ad scoring.

Gerrit Disbergen of Weston, Fla. and Lew Miller of Denver, Co., were the tournament's semifinalists.

This was the second One-On-One Doubles tournament held at the USTA National Men's Clay Court Championships. Andy Lake, formerly of Weston, Fla., defeated Mark Harrison of Melbourne, Fla. in the 2006 event held at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach.

“What an awesome concept for a new game,” Disbergen said.  “One-On-One Doubles is a great compliment to singles and doubles due to the variety and accuracy a player needs to reach their playing potential.”
