Nine Florida Players Selected to International Tennis Teams

Nine players with Florida roots were named to senior international tennis teams by the USTA. Trish Riddell, Maitland, Vesna McKenna, Hollywood, Susan Boyer, Coral Springs, Carolyn Nichols, Lodi, CA and Ft. Lauderdale, Joanne Russell, Naples, Mary Ginnard, Ft. Lauderdale, Richard Schmidt, Orlando, Bill Donadio, Winter Park and Larry Turville, Dunnellon, were selected to represent the USA in international competition April 27-May 3 in Mallorca, Spain.

These teams are the senior equivalent of Davis or Fed Cup. This year they will be played on red clay. The USA is the defending champion of the Maria Bueno Cup for women 50 and over and of the Maureen Connolly Cup for women 55 and over.

McKenna, Boyer, Nichols and Ginnard belong to the same club in Ft. Lauderdale, the venerable Lauderdale Tennis Club.

Riddell will captain the Suzanne Lenglen Cup team for women 35 and over. She was a member of the 2008 Lenglen Cup team which finished 4th in Antalya, Turkey. She reached the semifinals of the national grass and indoor tournaments and was a doubles finalist at the grass courts. She ended the year ranked #3 in 35 singles nationally.





McKenna
is playing on a Cup team for the first time. She is a member of the Young Cup team for women 40 and over. The Young Cup team finished 7th in 2008 in Antalya, Turkey. She had a breakout year in 2008, winning gold balls at the 30 and 40 clay courts in doubles and capping off her year with a win at the 40 grass courts (and overcoming 2 match points to do so). She ended the year ranked #2 in the US in 40 singles.





Boyer
is a member of the Margaret Court Cup for the second time. The USA finished third in 2008 in the Court Cup competition in Antalya. Boyer won the national 45 clay court doubles title in 2008 and was a semifinalist there in singles. She ended the year ranked #4 in 45 singles.






Nichols
is the playing captain of the Maria Bueno Cup team. Nichols won tournaments on red clay in Switzerland and Argentina and was third at the USA national 50 hard courts and a finalist at the national 45 clay courts. She captained the Bueno Cup team to victory the past two years in Antalya, Turkey. She ended the year ranked #4 in the USA and #2 Internationally.





Russell
and Ginnard are members of the Maureen Connolly Cup team. Russell is playing on her first senior Cup team. She won the 45 indoor doubles title in 2008 and was a singles finalist there. She was a finalist at the 45 grass, 40 indoors and 50 indoors in doubles and won the 40 clay court doubles title. Ginnard won the 55 grass and indoor doubles titles and was a finalist at the 50 grass courts in doubles. She was a member of the winning Connolly Cup team the past two years.













Schmidt
and Donadio are members of the Tony Trabert Cup team. Schmidt will be the playing captain. Schmidt was a member of the 2008 Trabert Cup team which finished fourth in Antalya, Turkey. He is the top ranked American player in the men’s 40s, having won the grass and indoors in 2008. He fell to his Trabert Cup teammate, Martin Barba of California in the final of the clay courts. He and Donadio won the clay and grass doubles titles and were finalists at the indoors. They ended the year ranked #1 in team doubles in the 40 and over category.












Turville
is a member of the Austria Cup team. He was a member of the Austria Cup team in 2008 which finished second in Antalya, Turkey. He was a finalist at the clay courts in 2008, and ended the year ranked #4 in men’s 55 singles.
