In 1999, the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP), conducted each summer on the campus of Eckerd College in St Petersburg and one of seven NYSP programs administered in the state of Florida, decided to incorporate a tennis component into its curriculum. NYSP is a federally funded and locally supported program in cooperation with the NCAA and other governmental agencies, where youths (ages 10-16) from low-income families have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life through educational and sports activities.

Under the leadership of Project Administrator Dr. Joseph Carella and Program Director Joe Smith, a partnership was formed with USA Tennis Florida with the goal of providing an environment in which youths enrolled in the program would be exposed to the sport of tennis, learn fundamentals and rules, and then have the opportunity to continue to develop their skills year round.

Over the past 3 years, the progress of the program is impressive. The program is now a registered NJTL program and 200 participants each summer are learning the basics and playing a modified version of tennis (“Ralleyball”). In 2003, two teams of 12 & under players represented the Eckerd College NYSP program at the USA Tennis Florida Clearwater Ralleyball Tennis Jamboree, with those players becoming first-time USTA Junior Members! And in 2004, under the guidance of Coach Curtis Cooks, many of the players are and will be participating in the First Serve program at the St Petersburg Tennis Center. Great Job Coach Cooks, Assistant Coach Julie Panton, and the entire NYSP staff!!!
