South Florida, Have you met your Community Coordinators?

September 28, 2004 09:22 AM
Cathy Nordlund and Cheryl Rivera are the two newest USA Tennis Community Coordinators to join USA Tennis Florida. They’re both assigned to Region 8. Cathy covers Region 8 South (Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties), and Cheryl is handling Region 8 North (Broward & South Palm Beach counties).

Cathy (Corso) Nordlund
was born and raised in sunny South Miami where she still resides with her husband and son.  Cathy became a tennis enthusiast just 5 years ago when her son went off to college.  Being an active volunteer in her community for the past twenty-one years she decided to join the USTA volunteer team. For the past two years she has worked closely with the Regional Director promoting tennis in the Miami area.  Cathy was directly involved in starting the Miami newsletter “Courtside Miami” which is sent out to every USTA member in the Miami and Keys area.  The newsletter is a wealth of information concerning all tennis activities going on.  She also has been involved in many charity tennis events raising money for Wheelchair Tennis, GMTF, and Helping Hands just to name a few.

Cathy joined the staff of USA Tennis Florida on August 2004, as a Community Coordinator for Region 8 South (Dade & Monroe Counties). Cathy’s role is to work with local volunteers and professionals within various community agencies/organizations to promote and develop USA Tennis programs throughout the area.

Her hobbies include boating, snow skiing, diving and gardening.

Cheryl Rivera, USA Tennis Community Coordinator for Region 8 North (Broward County), joined USA Tennis Florida in August 2004.  Prior to that she worked as a Case Worker for Community Services.  She is currently attending Union Institute and University for a B.A. in Public Administration.

Cheryl was introduced to tennis by former USA Tennis Florida staffer Loretta Strickland at a Tennis on the Move event.  She was very impressed by Loretta’s energy and by how fun tennis looked.   Since then Cheryl became a volunteer for the USTA and also involved in the Broward Tennis Association as a Board Member responsible for Marketing and Membership and as a parent coach for Team Tennis.  She is a member of Hope Worldwide (Helping Other People Everywhere) and she’s a facilitator for Hanley-Hanzelden parenting programs, Raising Resilient Children.

Cheryl has been married 14 years and has two daughters, ages 10 and 12 who enjoy playing tennis.  She comments “The favorite tennis thing that I have ever done was to take a group of children to see their first tennis match at the NASDAQ 100 in Miami. It was an amazing time for the children.”

Her hobbies include reading history and inspirational books. Her motto is to live your dreams with goals, order and determination.
