2004 Rita Foundation Events Raise Close to $300,000 for Local Breast Cancer Causes

The RITA Championships have been the largest charity tennis event in Jacksonville for the past six years.  The eighth RITA (Research Is The Answer) Championships were held on May 14, 15, and 16, 2004.  Over 130 doubles teams from NE Florida competed at three area country clubs.  In addition, there was a Party and Silent Auction on the Wednesday preceding the tournament. The net proceeds were over $58,000 and were part of $86,000 donated to the Baptist Cancer Institute for breast cancer research and patient programs.

But that’s not the whole story.  During 2004, the Rita Foundation held nine special events and donated $294,600 to local nonprofits.  The majority of the unrestricted grants were for breast cancer research, education, and patient programs.

One other special highlight was the fifth annual SenioRITAs Tennis Tournament and Auction at Sawgrass Women’s on October 22,23, and 24, 2004 at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra.  130 doubles teams competed and enjoyed the party and auction.  $ 50,000 was raised and donated equally to Baptist Medical Center, Beaches, and The Mayo Clinic in the Jacksonville area.

Since beginning in 1997, the RITA Foundation has donated over $1,182,000 in the fight against breast cancer. RITA is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and donates 100% of the net proceeds from their fund raising events.  There are no salaries or overhead costs.

The 2005 goal for the Foundation is to donate over $400,000.  For more information, call Charles Jantz, volunteer chairman at 904-363-1493.
