The University of West Florida Hosts Workshop

February 22, 2005 09:21 AM

University of West Florida Tennis Coach, Derrick Racine, hosted a USTA Recreational Coaches Workshop on Jan 29 for over 30 coaches and potential coaches.  Pros from the Pensacola area, high school tennis coaches from Pine Forrest, Walton, Washington, and local high school team tennis players attended the USTA sponsored 6-hour workshop.  The high school coaches suggested that this could be a great way to develop eventual tennis players for their teams.  Each of the coaches plans to use their high school players to help them conduct after-school tennis programs at the middle school and elementary level to introduce kids to tennis at an early age.  During this workshop students learned the basics of large group management and how to make learning tennis fun through games.  During a rainy morning, students played games inside emphasizing important skills needed in tracking and moving, and after lunch, they hit the outdoor courts to learn more games to reinforce those skills needed for tennis.
