Islamorada Spring Fling a Huge Success

April 8, 2005 01:09 PM

More than 30 junior tennis players showed their skill for the Islamorada Spring Fling on April 3rd at the Founders Park Tennis Center.  A picturesque Sunday afternoon was the background for the carnival style event.  Cathy Nordlund, USA Tennis Florida community coordinator had the junior players hit for prizes and medals, compete in contests and just have a grand old time.

“Cathy does a wonderful job and gladly came for the Spring Fling on very short notice,” said Phil Milford, tennis director of the park.  The junior jamboree and “teen scene” tennis concluded with a pizza party.

For the adults, this special event was topped off with an appearance from pro Andy Lake, a club professional who tours on the USTA 30 tournament circuit.  In 2003, Lake won a USTA Grand Slam in the 30 singles titles on all court surfaces: hard, clay, grass and indoor. Lake is currently the world’s number one ranked player in the (30 ) ITF seedings.

Lake participated in a one hour social Pro-Am with fifteen amateurs and five other pros (one for each court).  The other pros were Maciek Sykut, Dave Butterfield, Hank Brenner and Joey Hennessy.  Butterfield is the tennis director for the Cheeca Lodge.  Nationally ranked senior player Hank Brenner is a longtime Islamorada pro and former tennis director for Williams Island in Miami.  Maciek is currently ranked in the top five in the US (boys 18 and under division). He holds state high school Class A singles and doubles titles.  Local USPTA professional Joey Hennessy and USPTA pro Chuck Nihart were the additional pros.

To end this beautiful day in paradise, Andy Lake and Maciek Sykut participated in a Pro tennis exhibition. Lake bested Marathon tennis ace Sykut 8-6 to conclude this great event.

“More events like this are on the horizon for Founders Tennis Center, with the support and backing of USA Tennis Florida,” Milford concluded.
