In order to encourage the development of new tennis trainers and coaches, a Recreational Coaches Workshop was held at Key Biscayne Crandon Park Tennis Center (home to the NASDAQ-100) on April 23, 2005 to over 50 eager coaches, counselors and tennis players.

Cathy Nordlund, USTA Community Coordinator, with the cooperation of National Trainer, Butch Staples, created a wonderful and FUN learning experience for all that attended.

A Recreational Coach Workshop is a 6-hour on-court tennis training where the emphasis is placed on fun ways of teaching tennis to large groups of children and adults. Workshop participants learn valuable tips through numerous tennis techniques and drill progressions with special emphasis on getting them to play tennis quickly in a fun and social atmosphere utilizing the “Games Approach” method.

The participants in attendance included PE teachers, staff from Parks and Rec, Greater Miami Tennis Association teachers/coaches, and tennis pros seeking cutting edge and creative large group teaching methods. Everyone went home very tired but exhilarated from a fun day of learning new ways to teach tennis. A special thanks to USTA National Trainer, Butch Staples, for leading the 6-hour workshop and keeping his smile and enthusiasm the entire time!
