Weather report for Jacksonville Beach
: perfect day for fun in the sun and surf!! Not a cloud in the sky, the ocean is warming up! With Huguenot Tennis Center only two blocks from the beach, it was tempting not to spend the afternoon in the water cooling down.  However, there were 35 registered tennis enthusiasts from ages15 to 84 who spent the day in the hot sun on a hot tennis court with a desire to improve their coaching skills.  Pros, high school coaches and players, USATT-y team captains, Volunteer teachers, Parks and Rec. staff, and teachers gathered for a 6 hour training session.

With about 3 weeks to get planned and organized, Dede Allen, USA Tennis Florida Community Consultant gathered her resources and was able to “pull off” a very successful Recreational Coach Workshop (RCW).  She is a recently certified National Trainer who teamed with veteran trainer Chuck Hormann for this first time event in the Jacksonville area.

The RCW’s focus on ways to work with large groups – from beginners to more advanced players.  Using discussion, group drills, short courts, improvised courts, regulation courts, large foam balls (transition balls),  and pressure less balls; drills and skills are taught to all, with hopes that the participants will develop a comfort level for keeping large numbers of students involved during a teaching session.

Dede looks forward to scheduling another RCW in the fall – notices will be on the website.
