This USA Tennis Florida regional event, staged at Countryside Country Club on June 18 and presented by the Suncoast Tennis Foundation, featured beginning players ages 12 & under representing programs from Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas & Orange Counties, including 2 NJTL chapters. The day began with 65 players on 10 teams playing 5 exciting rounds of team tennis using the Ralleyball format of play. Coaches, volunteers and parents all took an active roll either assisting on court, cheering for their teams or snapping photos.

According to Curtis Cook, coach of the NYSP Eckerd College Tritons 12 & under squad, “Fantastic…our kids had a great time!” “Incredible…our players played better today than they do during practice!” noted Julie Panton, PTR pro at Willis S. Johns Center at Fossil Park in St. Pete. “Our players gained so much confidence today” added Christina Hill, Pasco County Rep. with 2 teams participating.   Rick Workman, host CCC Director of Tennis & USPTA pro, put it this way “What a tremendous format for them to learn the basics of the sport of tennis.” “We’re pleased to have hosted this event for the 3rd consecutive year and look forward to next year” stated Dave Preston, Head pro at CCC.

Following tennis and lunch, the players jumped back on the courts for chances to earn USA Tennis goodies in the Hit for Prizes event. The on-court agenda concluded with the Awards Ceremony in which all players received USA Team Tennis participation medals and 4 deserving winners received Sportsmanship Awards provided by USA Tennis Florida and the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour:

8 & Under – 1st place Julia Garon, East Lake Woodlands

Players, coaches and parents got to cool off at the day’s closing activity - a pool party complete with DJ music & games provided by Diamond Notes Entertainment – a great finish to a memorable day.

Thank you to all the players, coaches, parents, and sponsors – USA Tennis Florida, Suncoast Tennis Foundation, Countryside Country Club, Sony Ericsson WTA Tour - for being part of this year’s event. See you next year…until then, don’t forget to “Come Out Swinging.”
