More than 25 children participated in the City of Pensacola Cobb Center after school program during March, April and May.  The daily program offered tutoring for academic improvement, mentoring and healthy snacking for wholesome lifestyle practice, and tennis for active lifestyle training.  This beneficial program will also be offered throughout the coming school year – September through May 2006.

The City of Pensacola recently converted a basketball court into two small tennis courts and a hitting wall at the Cobb Center.  Tennis is played year-round by people of all ages at the Cobb Center. The city applied for a grant to help with the cost of the after school program which offers tennis to the children.

Coach Mike Smith worked with the youth twice a week after they finished their homework and healthy snacks.  Smith takes attendance to determine commitment, keeps abreast of academic achievement, and challenges each child’s tennis skills with ralleyball games.  Smith commends the children for an outstanding season of academics, sportsmanship and tennis.

Leisure Department Supervisor Joe Paschall praises the dedication Coach Smith has displayed at the Cobb Center.  Paschall is committed to expanding this program to other Pensacola centers that offer after-school programs to children.

This success story completes a third year the City of Pensacola, USA Tennis Florida and the Pensacola Jr. Tennis Association have partnered to offer tennis at the Cobb Center.
