Duval County Supports Tennis in Schools

August 24, 2005 10:20 AM

Duval County purchased 40 sets of tennis equipment for local schools during a USA Tennis Florida elementary school in-service for PE teachers at Greenland Pines Elementary in Mandarin.  There were two two-hour workshops on Aug. 3, where PE staff was taught how to work with large numbers of students in non-traditional tennis spaces with limited equipment.

National trainers Chuck Hormann and Dede Allen, USA Tennis Florida Community Consultant, lead the workshops, and Dede was grateful for all the support she received from Chuck, as well as Jacksonville volunteer Penny Rauckis and Duval County PE Supervisor Judy Hitzing.

“I had great team members,” Dede said. “Chuck, Penny and Judy were tremendous support.”

Judy also purchased 20 short courts that were given away in two separate drawings.  Teachers are highly encouraged to attend one of these in-services at least every other year, and attending teachers commented that in 30 years of teaching this was the best in-service they had attended!
