On Saturday, Sept. 24, more than 30 eager tennis coaches attended a Recreational Coaches Workshop at Shenandoah Park in Miami.

Participants in attendance included twenty City of Miami Parks and Recreation staff who have plans to incorporate tennis into their after-school programs.  Other attendees included staffs from the Greater Miami Tennis Foundation and Hank Kline Boys and Girls Club who have ongoing tennis programs.

These coaches seeking cutting edge and creative large-group teaching methods went home very tired but exhilarated from a fun day of learning. A special thanks to USTA National Trainer Butch Staples for leading the 6-hour workshop and maintaining his smile and enthusiasm the entire time, and USA Tennis Florida Community Coordinator Cathy Nordlund who put the workshop together.

“I am very excited to see the City of Miami bringing tennis to more than 20 of its parks,” Nordlund said.  “It was great to see the staff after the 6-hour workshop leave with such enthusiasm and newly acquired skills, anxious to start working with the children.”

A Recreational Coach Workshop is a 6-hour on-court tennis training where the emphasis is placed on fun ways of teaching tennis to large groups of children and adults. Workshop participants learn valuable tips through numerous tennis techniques and drill progressions with special emphasis on getting them to play tennis quickly in a fun and social atmosphere utilizing the “Games Approach” method.

If you missed this workshop, there are more scheduled!  For more information go to Workshop information.
