MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation Named 2005 USA Tennis NJTL of the Year

October 6, 2005 03:30 PM

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced the 2005 USA Tennis NJTL (National Junior Tennis League) of the year, and the Jacksonville-based MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation, lead by chapter director Terri Florio, is being recognized for its outstanding performance!  This award will be used to maintain and improve the NJTL programs that served more than 2,500 youth during the 04-05 fiscal year.

With 11 sites and hundreds of programs strategically placed in economically depressed neighborhoods, Malivai Washington Kids Foundation serves approximately 92% multicultural youth with a focus on the “total athlete,” encompassing physical, intellectual and emotional development.

In addition to a variety of tennis instruction and competition,  the NJTL also offers off-court life skills programs, including classes in character development, health and fitness, tutoring/mentoring, homework help and academic enrichment.  Community service opportunities and field trips are also available.

The Foundation offers a youth program called TnT (Tennis & Tutoring,) that equally focuses on tennis, academic and life skill development.  This program is designed for youth to learn in a fun, unique environment with tennis as the focus!

Nominated as the USA Tennis Florida NJTL of the year in 2004, MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation has been identified by the national NJTL staff as one of the strongest Capacity Building Chapters in terms of depth and breadth of service; and now the foundation is being recognized as the NJTL of the year!

Malivai Washington Kids Foundation is in the process of building a Youth Tennis & Education Center to serve as a central home for its programs.  The facility will be open to the community at large and is due to open in late 2006. [diagram shown below]

“All MaliVai Washington programs are offered free of charge,” director Florio said.  “The after school program incorporates the philosophy and values of the National Junior Tennis League.”

The National Junior Tennis League (NJTL) seeks to develop the character of young people through tennis and to emphasize the ideals of Arthur Ashe by:

  • Reaching out to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play the sport.
  • Instilling in youngsters the values of leadership and academic excellence.
  • Giving youngsters the opportunity to fully develop their tennis skills so they can drive a lifetime of enjoyment form the sport.
