The South Dade YMCA received a phenomenal response to their annual Family Fun Day Sunday, September 18!  More than 1,000 people attended this all-day Family Fun Day sponsored by Sofia Bank of Florida. This free event gave area residents a chance to see all that the YMCA has to offer.

USTA Florida region 8 – South helped make this day special for parents and children who attended.  Community Coordinator Cathy Nordlund set up interactive tennis activities on the tennis courts including Ralleyball Team Tennis Challenge, Beat the Pro, Tic-Tac-Toe, Obstacle Course Tennis and the all-time favorite Hit for Prizes.

Other activities including soccer clinics and a basketball clinic with former Miami Heat All Star and the Florida PitBulls Tim Hardaway.  Visitors enjoyed free Paella and Kentucky Fried Chicken as they visited booths set up by local businesses.

“YMCA and our local USTA have a great relationship,” Nordlund said.  “I can sit down with Tennis Director Michelle Striet and brainstorm about ideas to help grow tennis at the facility, and the next day she has already begun to implement them.”

South Dade YMCA has also been instrumental in helping grow the USTA Team Tennis program which Area League Coordinator Cyndi Johnston started this summer.  With more than 200 children participating in the program, the YMCA (with 12 lighted clay courts,) has been happy to host many of their matches.
