Miami, FL – The Greater Miami Tennis Foundation launched the Jim Berry ACES Program Jan. 13 at the Ashe-Buchholz Tennis Center at Moore Park in Miami.

Avid tennis player and Emmy award-winning CBS4 Sports Director Jim Berry backed a new program designed to plant inner-city tennis players on the path to college scholarships.  Berry was on-hand to introduce the first class of selected high school athletes.

“I’m excited to help provide an opportunity for minority youth to further their ambition in life through the sport of tennis,” Jim Berry says. “I want to see them get every advantage and the same kind of training that their competitors might receive. I want them to aim for a college education and use tennis as the means to get there.”

The youth, ages 14 to 18, will receive year-round training and equipment for tournament play as well as academic help, such as college entrance preparation.

“We design their fitness and conditioning plan, review their academic profile and give guidance with how to prepare for college and earn scholarships,” said Bruce Carrington, site director for the GMTF/The Children’s Trust After-School Program at Moore Park. “Jim Berry does the fund-raising, and he follows them as a mentor and motivates them to prepare for the college experience.”

For years, all net proceeds from the annual Jim Berry Tennis Classic have been directed to GMTF, which organizes and funds after-school and summer tennis programs for inner-city youth.

The Greater Miami Tennis Foundation offers tennis with a purpose. Our mission is to serve youth, adults and families in the community with quality programs that include fitness, nutrition and education.  Since 1974, GMTF has reached more than 35,000 youngsters in Miami-Dade County through programs in public parks and schools.  The foundation’s After-School Program at Moore Park is funded by The Children’s Trust. The Trust is a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County.
