More than 40 local junior players attended the second annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Youth Tennis Tournament on Jan. 14 at the Miami-Dade County Arcola Lakes Park in Miami.

Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Regional Manager Carolyn T. Gibson, Vernon Saunders, USTA Florida Community Coordinator Cathy Nordlund, North Dade men’s volunteer league coordinator Allen Gold, and volunteer Shelby Nordlund all worked together to make this tournament a success!

Cathy, Allen and Shelby provided fun tennis games for the children such as Tennis Tic Tac Toe, Ralleyball and Test your Serve with a speed gun.  Water bottles, tennis bracelets, and other tennis gifts were given out as prizes, and PaPa Johns provided pizza for the kids.

"Clearly, we could not have pulled this event off without the support of USTA and PaPa Johns Pizza,” said Gibson.  “They arrived right on time and the kids gobbled up the deliciously warm, cheesy pizza!"

Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation runs afterschool tennis programs at many of their parks. The USTA Team Tennis program is expanding to include more public parks with tennis courts; a few of them: Arcola Lakes Park, Colonial Drive Park, Kendall Lakes Park, Goulds Park, North Glades Park.

Nordlund looks forward to this “tennis expansion” within her region 8 community.

“Even though it was a windy day, the fun did not stop,” Nordlund said.  “I think the staff had as much fun as the kids!”
