Palm Coast Friends of Tennis making a difference

February 10, 2006 11:08 AM

The newly formed Palm Coast grassroots community tennis association (CTA) Friends of Tennis has seen recent success!  With a mission to build affordable tennis courts and promote tennis programs in the Palm Coast area, Friends of Tennis has spent months lobbying the City Council and government officials.

Through the influence of Friends of Tennis, a win/win situation has been created for tennis in Palm Coast.  In December 2005, Palm Coast City Council committed to reallocate funds in the recreation and parks budget to fast track the building of a 10-court facility that will have eight clay and two hard courts!

The tennis facility has an expected completion date for fall 2006.  Steering committee member Marie Wolf anticipates a full revitalization of tennis in Flagler County!

“To date, we are working with Special Olympics and Junior Olympic Skills Competition events and anticipate assisting with a Rallyball program in the spring,” Marie said. “Plans are launched for a quadrant tennis program in April and May. Many future programs are planned.”

Marie is thankful for members in the local community who have helped Friends of Tennis in its mission:

  • Director of Recreation and Parks John Jackson fully supports the effort and is on board with the goals of expanding and making tennis sustainable in the community.
  • USTA Forida Community Coordinator Trina Singian has been instrumental from the early stages in providing direction, support and credibility.
  • USTA Florida Director of Community Development Linda Curtis is assisting with the preparation of a facilities grant application.
  • The Tennis Network of Greater Volusia County (local CTA) has offered technical assistance and experience.

Friends of Tennis is very thankful to combine its energy and efforts with the city, USTA Florida and other local CTA resources.

Developed in August 2005, Friends of Tennis of Palm Coast is a community tennis association and advocacy group with a mission to build affordable tennis courts and promote local tennis programs.  This grassroots organization has a steering committee of nine and a base of several hundred members who attend regular meetings and contribute variously.

Friends of Tennis Steering Committee Members: Arlene Burnett, Bill Hepburn, Sharon Hepburn, George Libonate, Ted Markowski, Carol Ogden, Terri Wiss, Donald Wolf, Marie Wolf.
