On February 18, McKethan Park in Brooksville was packed with children and adults of all shapes, colors and sizes.  Family members volunteered as coaches for the youth Ralleyball players, children played tennis games to win prizes, and local officials helped with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in celebration of the newly resurfaced City of Brooksville tennis courts through a $5,000 USTA Adopt-a-Court grant with matching city funds!

As USTA Florida county representatives, Louise and John Downey were thrilled to see so many local officials support the ribbon-cutting ceremony and tennis event in Brooksville.  The courts will now serve as the official site for the new local National Junior Tennis League, (NJTL).

“John and I wanted to create an opportunity for NJTL players and their families to meet the individuals responsible for the new courts,” Louise said.  “And we wanted the Brooksville children to play Ralleyball with nearby Spring Hill youth.  It was a great combined tennis event.”

“The event proved to be a wonderful multi-cultural experience,” John said.  “There were teams from both the Brooksville NJTL and the Spring Hill Ralleyball programs.  I think the children really benefited from the diversity experience.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was enriched by the following local officials:

Mr. Joe Johnston, III – Mayor of Brooksville
Mr. Richard Anderson – City of Brooksville Manager
Mr. Ernie Weaver – County Councilman
Mr. Mike Walker – City of Brooksville Parks and Recreation Director
Ms. Tina Nicholas – Jerome Brown Center Program Director III

The local Community Tennis Association – Nature Coast Tennis Foundation – paid more than $300 to sponsor the event, and they also provided volunteers.

“This was truly a well-organized, fun-filled event!” – Tina Nicholas.

“Wow, I can’t believe what a great turn out!  The courts are filled with kids!” – Parent.

“Can we do this again next weekend?!” NJTL player.
