The tennis courts at San José Country Club in Jacksonville were bustling with more than 110 young players on Sunday, April 2, for the free USTA Florida Junior Team Tennis Play Day!

Junior team tennis players and their siblings were divided by age, and games were played as the children rotated from one court to the next.

Participants were awarded monopoly-style money that could be used to purchase gifts – more than 200 items to choose from – such as tennis towels, hair ties, tennis banks, balls, t-shirts and miscellaneous fun items like jump ropes, yoyos, lanyards, visors and beach toys!

There was also a raffle drawing for tennis bags, tickets to the Bausch & Lomb and passes to Adventure Landing.  Sandwiches and beverages were provided.  Junior Team Tennis Spring season participation gifts were presented, and current stats-n-standings were available.  All attendees received complimentary wristbands from the Andy Roddick Foundation.

USTA Florida Director of Competitive Tennis Andy Gladstone gave a presentation, informing parents about regional and state tournaments.  Gladstone held a Q&A session, and Deer Wood Director of Tennis Danny Witt provided local event information.  Carolyn Moore assisted Gladstone and recruited parents for his presentation.

USTA Florida Junior Team Tennis Area League Coordinator Diana Gardner said she could not have put this end-of-the-year party together without the help of many staff and volunteers.  She thanks the following individuals for their tremendous help:

  • San José Country Club for hosting the annual event again
  • San José Country Club Director of Tennis Marie Waller who coordinates the professionals and the games
  • San José Country Club professional staff Leo Vorwerk, Reggie Exum, Nathan Shanks
  • Her husband Howard Gardner
  • Elaine Denney from Mills Field
  • Noni Larson from St Johns Country Day School
  • Nancy Goff from Hampton Glen
  • Diane Mangum from Williams YMCA
  • Micheline Chelette and Debi Graham from Oak Bridge
  • USTA Florida Community Coordinator Dede Allen
  • Many parents helped with the prize tables, distributing food, and preparing the season participation gifts, including Bob & Julie Maiolo, Larry Hedges and Emily Lughino.

“Thanks again everyone for making this a wonderful day both for the kids and the adults!” Diana said.

Next on Diana’s agenda for the Jacksonville area is a USTA Junior Team Tennis Spring Fling Tournament at Selva Marina in Atlantic Beach on May 7 from 1:00-5:00 p.m.  All ages and skill levels are welcome to attend this half-day team tennis tournament!
