Twenty local coaches assembled at the Pelican Preserve Country Club in Fort Myers on Sunday April 9 for a USTA Florida Recreational Coach Workshop (RCW).

USTA National trainer Susan Allshouse conducted the workshop, and USTA Florida Community Coordinator Susie Bessire said, “As always she did an OUTSTANDING job!”

“In spite of driving down in the rain and wondering if I was going to have to move the location to a covered area ten miles away,” Bessire said.  “We managed to stay dry all day, and the cloudy, cool weather made it a most enjoyable day.”

Bessire said she has never seen adults having so much fun on the tennis courts while they simultaneously learned something!

“Many of these folks have been USPTA instructors for years and they all admitted how much they learned throughout the day,” Bessire said.  “A few of them have already incorporated some of the new teaching ideas into their programs.  This tells me how successful and important these workshops are!”

Bessire would like to thank USTA Florida Region 7 Director and Board Member Bob Bueckert for allowing her to host the RCW at his club.

Trainer Susan Allshouse enjoys working with Lee County volunteers.

“They are a great group,” Allshouse said.  “There were old and new faces, and the participants were very enthusiastic!”

Parks instructors from Lee, Charlotte, Collier and Clewiston/Hendry Counties, and two college students participated.  The majority of the participants were seniors; however, the college students came to learn about teaching after-school tennis programs.  The two groups interacted well together.

“All were players,” Susan said.  “Susie and I look forward to working with these individuals to develop their local programs.”
