More than 200 people came out for the free USTA Block Party at the Henry L. McMullen Tennis Complex in Clearwater Saturday, May 13.  Participants celebrated USTA National Tennis Month and USPTA Tennis Across America Day.

A tennis carnival, target courts, a variety of tennis racquet and skill games and activities, round-robins, Rapid Rally and mini tennis were a few activities that kept the children, adults and seniors entertained and moving!  And all participants received prizes!

Sponsors include Suncoast Tennis Foundation (STF,) USPTA Florida District 7, City of Clearwater and Advantage Yours Tennis and Running store.  STF Executive Director Judy Foster promoted the event throughout the community.

USTA Florida was well represented by community coordinator Jeff Davis and regional director Nancy Morgan.

“Through this event, we hope to demonstrate the social and health benefits of tennis,” Davis said.

Mother of two boys, 9 and 11, Mei Berry planned to stop by the block party only for a few minutes.

“The boys were having so much fun that we stayed two and a half hours to the very end!” Berry said.  “I’m so pleased that this event inspired both of my sons to play more.  They can’t wait to get on the court!”

USPTA Florida District 7 President Dave Freiman was very pleased by the partnerships that resulted from the coordination and running of this event.

“This was an awesome event partnering a great facility, a super volunteer organization in the Suncoast Tennis Foundation, the City and the fantastic USPTA teaching professionals in our district,” Freiman said.  “’Fun and Festive’ was the theme of the day!”

USPTA CEO Tim Heckler supports Tennis Across America and its supplemental programs.

“Through these programs, the USPTA has succeeded in identifying new segments of current and future tennis-playing consumers,” he said.  “The participation of these groups opens the doors of opportunity for everyone involved in the sport.  It creates a common bond for all involved.”

Davis said that all 2006 partners have agreed to work together to put on the event again next year.  Clearwater and surrounding areas, heads up for the 2007 USTA Block Party!
