Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation prepares for yearly tribute

September 13, 2006 11:06 AM

The eighth annual Swingtime – a Pro-Celebrity Pro-Am Tennis & Golf Tournament, benefiting the Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation and hosted by Stock Development – will take place in Naples Nov. 18-19.

According to event co-host Tom Gullikson, his late brother Tim would be a huge fan of the yearly charity event.
“I know if my brother, Tim, was still alive, he would have loved taking part in Swingtime.  His biggest passions were playing tennis and golf, and helping people,” Tom said.  “We miss Tim every day, but we know he’d be proud of how we’ve carried on the legacy he helped start with the Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation.

"Even when Tim was very sick, he sought ways to transform his battle with brain cancer into a positive experience that would help others battling the disease,” Tom said.

The Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation was established in 1995 by the Gulliksons, both former world-class tennis pros and distinguished coaches, after Tim was diagnosed with malignant brain tumors.

Tim Gullikson, who as a coach helped establish Pete Sampras as the top player in the world, died in 1996, at age 44, after losing his battle with the disease.

The Foundation’s mission is to fund care and support programs to assist brain-tumor patients and their families in managing the physical, emotional and social challenges presented by the illness.  Among other things, the Foundation funds information and support phone lines for brain tumor patients and their families, sends children who are brain tumor survivors to camp, and gives college scholarships to students who have been affected by brain tumors.

As in the past seven years, Swingtime will feature an A-list line-up of celebrities, including tennis legend Chris Evert, two-time Grand Slam finalist Todd Martin, former top 10 player Aaron Krickstein, and current tour players Mardy Fish, Taylor Dent and Jamea Jackson.

Swingtime is a fun-filled, action-packed weekend that offers numerous activities including a Round-Robin Tennis Pro-Am and Tennis Exhibition at The Players Club & Spa at Lely Resort, a Golf Pro-Am Tournament at Olde Cypress, and “An Evening With The Stars” Swingtime Gala presented by Allen Systems Group at Naples Grande Resort & Club.  All of these activities provide Swingtime patrons with the opportunity to hobnob with the many professional athletes and celebrities that take part in the weekend.

Stock Development, the official Swingtime host sponsor, is one of the most dynamic and fastest growing development companies in Southwest Florida with properties from Naples to Cape Haze.
Allen Systems Group (ASG), a computer software firm based in Naples continues its participation in Swingtime as the Gala sponsor. Andy M. Custer, P.A. also continues its support in Swingtime as the Awards Reception Sponsor.  Other valued Swingtime sponsors include JetBlue Airways, Meridian Broadcasting - Lite 93.7, n Magazine, Naples Daily News, The Naples, Marco Island & Everglades Convention & Visitors Bureau, Naples Grand Resort & Club, Nike, Rado, Tennis Week and Waterman Broadcasting – NBC2.   A new official sponsor this year is The Oliver Group, a highly respected firm well known for its residential and commercial real estate, retail and ranching interests.
