College club teams compete across the state

October 5, 2006 02:29 PM

The USTA Florida College Championship Series is off to a great start after a successful inaugural event Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the Florida State University campus in Tallahassee.

The tournament was the first in a series of events that continue through the beginning of next year.  With a total of four series events and a fifth and final championship in February, college club tennis teams are provided an opportunity to battle it out against club teams from other Florida schools.

The two-day tournament drew 37 teams from five different schools in the state: 12 teams from Florida State University (FSU), 13 teams from University of Central Florida (UCF), seven teams from University of South Florida (USF), two teams from University of Florida (UF) and one team from University of Miami (UM).

USTA Florida's Karen MacFarland and Kelly Tucker directed the tournament and Brent Boostrom of UCF and Mike Darcy of FSU helped coordinate the event.

"The weather was perfect," Kelly said.  "Everyone had a really great time, and the players were all nice, good kids."

Schedule of remaining tournaments in series:
Oct. 14-15: UCF
Nov. 4-5: UF
Jan. 27-28: Miami
Feb. 17-18: The fifth and final series event – USTA Campus Championship/Florida Section – will be at Florida Gulf Coast University.
