A place that Polk County tennis players call home

October 11, 2006 08:34 AM

"In the state, there's nothing like the Polk County Tennis Association, (PCTA).

The association, which includes some 10 clubs in Polk County and more than 350 members, has provided league play and junior activities for years, accentuating tournaments and leagues with awards, parties, food and discounts.

'They are unique to the state and the country in that it's run by every teaching pro,' USTA Florida executive director Doug Booth said. 'They work very closely together. There are pro groups in Florida, but none work as closely as they do day in and day out and over the number of years. In other areas, it's fragmented. Some pros don't even talk to each other.'

'We all try to work toward the same goal,' Lakeland City pro Dave Beerman said. 'That's to promote tennis of all levels and abilities.'"
