Five-week league teaches Pensacola kids TENNIS

October 31, 2006 02:43 PM

In partnership with the Pensacola Jr. Tennis Association, USTA Florida set up a five-week tennis league to introduce youth to the game of tennis.  A form of tennis play for beginners – Ralleyball – was taught to nearly 100 kids for five Thursdays during summer months at tennis facilities in the greater Pensacola area.

Parent volunteers lead the program, helping children with their matches at the different locations, including University of West Florida, Pensacola Racquet Club, Pensacourt, Holley-by-the-Sea and Roger Scott.

A celebration concluded the season – participants were awarded T-shirts, medals, championship platters and miscellaneous tennis gear.

USTA Florida community consultant René Grifol was excited to bring this Jr. Team Tennis program to the Pensacola area.

"Parents and children had a great time on the tennis courts with new friends, fun and some good healthy fitness," he said.  "It was very exciting for the kids.  They were able to travel and compete, 'just like the adults.'"

René thinks this program is perfect for beginners just getting in to the sport.

"There is no pressure on the kids to win in this league," he said.  "The emphasis is on playing, having fun, making friends and getting fit.  Come on out and play with us!"

Parent coach Pam Endacott is very impressed by the commitment, sportsmanship and teamwork the league develops.
