Saturday, Oct. 28, 40 high school students representing seven area schools competed at the USTA Brevard High School League Tournament at DeSoto Park in Brevard County.  Despite the early morning rain, the skies cleared and the college students battled it out on the courts.

Eau Gallie, Merritt Island, Rockledge, Astronaut, Cocoa, Melbourne, Palm Bay and Viera high school students were among the participants who were divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

The tournament was open to all students, and great support was provided by local high school coaches to promote the event.

Eau Gallie High School students swept the competition, winning each of the three levels.  They were awarded Best Buy gift certificates.

Beginner – Paul Mannier (Eau Gallie HS)
Intermediate – Adam Cangiano (Eau Gallie HS)
Advanced – Wagner Chilan (Eau Gallie HS)

Lunch was provided by Doubles Beachside.  This league tournament provided an opportunity for students to play others at their own skill level before the spring season begins.

USTA Florida community coordinator Trina Singian was encouraged by the students' enthusiasm.

"Some of the players mentioned that it was their first tennis competition," Singian said.  "They were very excited about the experience."

DeSoto Park tennis director Lori Shiavone helped organize the tournament, and Brevard County area league coordinator Cheryl Puleo provided information about local tennis opportunities, including the Jr. Team Tennis program.  Special thanks to the high school coaches and volunteers who made the event possible – and successful!

"The kids really enjoyed themselves," Singian said.  "It was a day for them to play tennis, compete and have fun with their friends."
