First-ever tennis celebration for Region 1 West

November 15, 2006 01:34 PM

On Oct. 14, the Blue Water Bay Tennis Center in Niceville hosted a USTA Florida-sponsored celebration of local tennis successes.

Organizations were recognized for their efforts in growing the game locally, awards were presented and future plans for local tennis growth were discussed.  Lunch was served, (organized by Okaloosa County representative Doug Barthel,) and then attendees headed to the courts for a round-robin!

USTA Florida local league coordinator Diana Waters enjoyed the time she spent at the celebration.

"I loved gathering with other league coordinators that live on the other side of the district!" she said.

USTA Florida region 1 director Karen MacFarland spearheaded and conducted this celebration.  USTA Florida Escambia County representative Terry Thrash reviewed local tennis highlights, and tennis enthusiasts from around the region were recognized.

MacFarland and USTA Florida community consultant René Grifol presented the following awards:

Valparaise Elementary School and PE teacher Linda Holloway – USTA Schools program of the year

Bay County Tennis Association and Angela Holliman – USTA Jr. Team Tennis program of the year

Youth Village and executive director Nellie Bogar – USTA 501c program of the year
