Fall Festivals in Northeast Florida

Tennis was an integral part of making the Fall Festivals in St. Johns and Nassau Counties exciting and fun for all children who came to celebrate the fall season!

Nassau County Fall Festival organizer Karen Turner arranged an event for local kids at Yulee Elementary School on Nov. 3.  Tennis, a favorite activity among attendees, is now being implemented into the school physical education program!

The next day, on Nov. 4, Timberlin Creek Elementary Fall Festival organizer Kathy Newton coordinated the annual St. Johns County Fall Festival at Timberlin Creek Elementary School in St. Augustine.  More than one thousand kids came out to play, and non-traditional tennis games such as Tic-Tac-To tennis-style were introduced and enjoyed by all.

Tennis In-service for Catholic schools

In November, USTA Florida introduced tennis to teachers and coaches from a six-county area at the Kingdome at Christ the King School in Jacksonville.

St. Augustine Diocese Athletic Director Lee Ann Heekin organized a tennis in-service for the Catholic schools in Nassau, Duval, St. Johns, Clay and Flagler Counties.  She looks forward to getting a tennis program going.

USTA Florida community consultant Dede Allen helped administer the workshop.

"It is time to get tennis back in the picture at these schools," Allen said.  "We needed to make sure the teachers felt comfortable and got excited about working with the kids."

Tennis In-service in Alachua County

Extended Day Curriculum Specialist Julie Roundtree of Alachua County organized an after-school crew for a three-hour tennis in-service training session for 19 area schools on Nov. 14 at Finley Elementary School in Gainesville.

"I wanted to organize an active program for the kids in the extended day program," Roundtree said.  "I felt tennis was the sport to go with."

Roundtree looks forward to implementing these programs in the Alachua County area.
