UCF Wins Their First Event of 2007

February 8, 2007 01:20 PM

This years Ibis Open was another great event hosted by the University of Miami on Jan. 27-28.  Ten teams participated from the University of Miami (UM), University of Central Florida (UCF), University of South Florida (USF) and Florida International University (FIU).  The event remembered Lee Weisbrod, an active freshman in the UM Tennis Club, by adding his name to the back of t-shirts that all participants received at the tournament.  Last year, Lee was tragically killed in a Florida lightning storm over the summer.
Each team played four matches Saturday to be seeded for pool play Sunday.  Rain postponed matches until the afternoon, but it was worth the wait.  USF and UM squared off in one semifinal match as UCF A played UCF B in the other semifinal.  Both were close matches; however, UM and UCF A were destined to meet in the finals.

The 'U' put up a good fight to keep the trophy in Miami, but UCF was determined to win its first tournament of the year.  UCF took first place and received 200 points for their victory.

Congratulations to all and a special thank you to Jackie Engebretson and the UM Tennis Club for hosting the Ibis Open!
