Welcome Back to Tennis at The Villages

March 5, 2007 04:02 PM

On Saturday, Feb. 17, USTA Florida assisted with a Welcome Back to Tennis event at the Chatham Village Recreational Center in The Villages, Fla.  USTA Recreational Coach National Trainer, Dede Allen, USTA Florida Community Coordinator, Matt Graham, Chatham Village Recreational Director, Terry Wilson, and 12 volunteers helped make this event possible.

Despite the cold weather, 60 people showed up ready to learn.  The day was filled with on-court tennis activities, food and drinks, tennis tips, warm-up and cool-down activities, prizes and sign-up opportunities for continuing tennis programs.  USTA Florida provided the trainer and helped Terry organize the event.  The Chatham Village Recreational Center was awarded grant money to cover the costs associated with hosting the affair.

"The Villages have been an ideal location to host this type of event,” said Matt.  “For a second time here, it was a success despite the frigid weather.”

Dede added, “People love tennis out here at The Villages!  It was a cold one, but there was a great turnout and people really enjoyed themselves.”

The purpose of Welcome Back to Tennis is to encourage players age 50 and older who used to play tennis to get back in the game.  It also provides and opportunity for those who would like to start playing tennis a chance to do just that.
