While a few men’s and women’s tennis programs are cut nationally, tennis is alive and well at Jacksonville University (JU).  On March 11, Jarod Camerota, head coach for Jacksonville University Men’s and Women’s tennis teams, welcomed Keith Watson and his family to the JU courts for the dedication of a new 6 court tennis facility on campus.

The Jacksonville University, Keith Watson Family Tennis Center was donated through the generosity of Keith Watson and his family, with the support of Jacksonville University.  Keith, a graduate of Jacksonville University, member of the tennis team and long time resident of this area has always had a passion for tennis and the Jacksonville Dolphins.

“JU gave me a scholarship back at a time when I needed it,” he said.  “I’m at a point in my life where I am able to give back to a school that holds a special place in my life.  It is a thrill for me to give back to an institution that gave me a chance to do what I wanted to do in life, and I am very excited about being able to do so."

Keith has taught some adult classes in business law and contracts at the University and also served on the athletic board.  He is a member of the JU Athletic Hall of Fame and now a University Trustee.  His diverse involvement in Jacksonville University has earned him the respect of co-workers, friends and family.

"We are honored to have Keith Watson's name associated with our University and with JU tennis," said JU President Kerry Romesburg.  "Not only is Mr. Watson an alumnus and now a University Trustee, he was also an excellent tennis player for JU a few years ago.  Now he is helping assure our current and future student-athletes will have a first-class venue for practice and competition."

An enthusiastic group was on hand to celebrate the dedication, and the evening ended with a Jacksonville University men’s match win over Appalachian State University.

The future looks bright for Jacksonville University tennis thanks to Keith Watson and his family.  The new tennis center is a great asset for the teams and will undeniably keep the sport on the rise in Jacksonville.
