One Up, One Down

On Saturday, September 29 at Maxwell Tennis Park in Pembroke Pines, USTA Florida board member Nancy Horowitz and City of Pembroke Pines Director of Tennis, Pierre Arnold, hosted a FREE “one up, one down” wheelchair round robin tennis tournament.  One up, one down means a wheelchair player is matched with an able bodied player to form a doubles team.

Eight adult wheelchair players and eight top junior players, ages 14-18 who are part of tennis camp at Maxwell Tennis Park, participated in the event.  Each wheelchair player was matched with a junior player.  Beautiful weather made for a successful event and an enjoyable day at the courts.

Steve Barber, Jan Proctor, Nexon Louis, Juana Hurtado, David Harrison, Pani Herath, Matt McManus, and Herman Sanchez were the wheelchair players and Mario Becerra, Juan Rocha, Gina Suarez, Scott MacDonald, Kristy Kung, Luis Elizondo, Kyle Hopkins and Liz Renteria made up the junior players.

“This was something we have wanted to do for awhile,” explained Nancy.

Tennis opportunities for persons in wheelchairs are of utmost importance to the duo because they know the benefits tennis gives to people, whether able-bodied or disabled.   The sport provides everyone an opportunity to share in activities with their peers or family members and most importantly, it is FUN.  Anyone can pick up a racquet and play the game!

“The tournament was a great experience for all players involved,” said Pierre. “Everybody was competitive and enjoyed the tennis; hopefully, we will host another event like this in the near future.”

Congratulations to first place finishers and tournament champions, Jan Proctor and Luis Elizondo, and to all wheelchair event participants!
