December 12, 2007 03:19 PM

Hillsborough County Tennis Association (HCTA) President, Sharon Belmudez, and Tennis Director at FishHawk Ranch, Ray Belmudez, are quite an asset to the USTA Florida Section.  The dynamic husband-wife duo from Valrico dedicate countless volunteer hours to tennis and the tennis organizations they are part of, which has earned the pair USTA Florida’s December Volunteer of the Month recognition.

Since moving from Nebraska, where Sharon served on the Omaha Tennis Association Board as Junior Chairman and Local League Coordinator (LLC), Sharon and Ray have been County Representatives for Region 3 in Hillsborough County for two years. They promote anything and everything tennis, and especially USTA league tennis as Sharon is the Local League Coordinator (LLC) for adult and senior, and mixed and combo divisions for the region.  Serving in her third year as LLC, she has organized and conducted matches for local leagues, and assisted players with questions and needs.

Last year, Ray was recognized as 2006-2007 USPTA District Pro of the Year for the Florida Division in Tampa.  Both he and his son, Sean, share a passion for teaching tennis as they are USPTR certified teaching professionals.

“I enjoy helping and seeing the game of tennis grow and the achievement of an individual,” said Ray, who is also USPTA certified and skilled to teach cardio tennis.

Sharon enjoys the camaraderie that comes with the game.  “It gives me a sense of accomplishment as I give back to a sport that I have grown to love,” she said.  “Volunteering gives me an opportunity to work together with a great group of individuals whose common goal is to promote tennis.”

Volunteers like Ray and Sharon are role models because the share a passion for not only the sport of tennis but those in the community as well.

“The tennis community is fortunate to have people like Ray and Sharon who have stepped forward and volunteered their time to advocate for tennis,” said Jeff Davis, Region 3 community coordinator.

Thank you, Sharon and Ray, for sharing your passion for tennis with those in the Hillsborough county area.  USTA Florida salutes you this month!
