Miami Racks Up Seven New Beginner League Teams

January 25, 2008 12:26 PM

On Wednesday, Jan. 23 from 9:30a.m.-12:00p.m., 30 gregarious ladies were freshly introduced to the wonderful game of tennis at the South-Dade YMCA. A free tennis clinic was organized by USTA Florida South Region 8 Community Coordinator, Cathy Nordlund, along with volunteers and USTA Florida League Captains, Sandy Teter and Vicki Wyman, to teach tennis to beginner level players at the 2.5 level.

The morning started out with a Q and A session about the basic rules of tennis; for instance, questions like, “When do you call a let?” and “When is coaching allowed?”  Prizes were given out to the ladies who answered the questions right.  Players then went to the courts where Michelle Streit, Director of Tennis, and tennis pros Decio Gomes, Wendie Whitten, Pat Collazo, George Morales, Vince Perri and Gizzelle Brito from the YMCA held a tennis clinic and walked the ladies through the often confusing Coman tiebreaker.  Refreshments were served and by noon, the women had a whole new tennis repertoire to carry on in their game.

“This is our third year in doing this, and each year, the YMCA donates their pros time and facility,” said Nordlund. “Because of the hard work of everyone, especially Sandy and Vicki, we now have seven 2.5 teams in Miami for the spring season!”
