Volusia County Gator Tennis Day

March 4, 2008 10:24 AM

On Sunday, Feb. 24, USTA Florida East Region 4 Community Coordinator, Molly Zimmer, and USTA Florida Director of Competitive Tennis, Andy Gladstone, took a busload of Volusia County USTA Florida Jr. Team Tennis players, parents and coaches to see the University of Florida’s men’s tennis team play Illinois in Gainesville.

“What a great day and an awesome tennis spirit,” said Gladstone, who counted 31 people on the trip. “I’m not sure who had more fun, us or the kids!”

Andy and Molly organized the bus trip to help build team camaraderie between USTA Florida Jr. Team Tennis players, coaches and staff.  Once at the Ring Tennis Complex, site of Gator tennis matches, the kids were treated to a pre-match talk with Gator Head Coach Andy Jackson, Illinois head Coach Brad Dancer and Florida players. Approximately 600 loud enthusiastic fans cheered the Gators to a 4-3 victory against Illinois. Four singles matches went 3 sets, with No. 1 and top 10 collegiate player in the country, Greg Ouellette from Ormond Beach, pulling out a clutch performance at the end for the Gators.

After match play, all the kids received Gator tennis posters and got autographs from their favorite players.

“The weather was dry, sunny and in he 70’s,” said Gladstone. “What else could you ask for? I can’t say enough good things about the day. It was free motivation, and a lot of fun for everyone involved.”

Special thanks to Coach Andy Jackson, Coach Brad Dancer and USTA Florida Region 4 County Rep, Bob Pfaender.
