On Saturday, April 26, USTA Florida Region 4 Community Coordinator Molly Zimmer welcomed six Brownie, Girl Scout and Junior troops from Volusia County to the Florida Tennis Center who were working to earn their “Try It” badge.  Molly thought tennis would be a perfect opportunity for the troops to not only earn a badge, but have fun in the process.  Fifty girls, along with their troop leaders got on-court tennis experience with USTA National Trainer, Rita Gladstone, and learned about the rules of tennis off-court.

Four members of the Spruce Creek High School tennis team aided in the day’s activities, giving a double’s demonstration and working firsthand with the tennis newcomers.  Special thanks to Brittany Schroeder and sisters Korey, Kasey and Kelsey Love.

“It was a great partnership between the Girls Scouts Citrus Council and USTA Florida to introduce the girls to tennis and get them involved in a lifelong sport,” said Molly.  “The goal of the event was to help the girls earn a badge for something new they have done, and that goal was certainly accomplished.”
