Tamiami Tennis Center Back in Business

May 27, 2008 08:40 PM

Two years after the Tamiami Tennis Center in Miami was closed due to Hurricane Wilma, Friends of Miami Tennis (FOMT), a not for profit Community Tennis Association (CTA), is pleased to announce the tennis center is back open for play! On May 7, 2008, Friends of Miami Tennis took over the tennis center and has partnered with Miami Dade County Parks and Recreation to bring USTA programs to the facility, including leagues, Jr. Team Tennis, adaptive tennis and QuickStart Tennis, the new way to play tennis for kids 10 and under.

Housed on the 248 acre beautiful Tamiami Park located down the street from Florida International University and next to the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds, the tennis center has 6 lighted tennis courts and is a wonderful place to bring the whole family, play tennis and enjoy other activities such as swimming, soccer, baseball and beach volleyball. To celebrate tennis at the park, FOMT is hosting a Tennis Block Party on Sunday, June 8 from 2:00 – 5:00p.m. The Tennis Block Party will include fun tennis games with prizes and bring together the community for a fun day of tennis and music!

“USTA Florida is working very closely with Parks and Recreation to bring quality tennis at affordable prices to this mainly Hispanic community,” said Cathy Nordlund, USTA Florida South Region 8 Community Coordinator. “Many of the surrounding schools participate in the USTA School Tennis program, so we definitely hope to connect more students with after school tennis programs at the center.”

Head tennis professional at the center is Paul Johnson, a coach for the USTA Florida Multicultural High Performance Training Camp in Daytona Beach and who, for the past 11 years has run Helping Hands which he received a USTA Florida Diversity Achievement Award. Through the Helping Hands program, Paul has trained children to reach top tennis rankings and earn college scholarships to prestigious universities.

“Tamiami Tennis is very lucky to have such a dedicated and accomplished USPTA pro on staff,” said Nordlund.

Friends of Miami Tennis is thrilled to promote tennis at Tamiami Park. Nordlund says, “The Latin community brings so much to this beautiful park. With their strong family ties and Latin music all around the tennis courts at night, the atmosphere is absolutely awesome.”

Tamiami Tennis Center is located at 11201 SW 24 Street in Miami. For information about programs or the upcoming Tennis Block Party, contact Cathy Nordlund at Nordlund@florida.usta.com.
