Hot Tennis at the Ibis Open

February 17, 2009 02:20 PM

The University of Miami (UM) hosted its Fourth Annual Ibis Open at Crandon Park Tennis Center on Key Biscayne, Feb. 7-8. The tournament was the fourth event of the 2008/2009 College Championship Series and drew 90 players from seven different universities, including the University of Florida (UF), University of Central Florida (UCF), University of South Florida (USF), Florida International University (FIU), Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), UM and the distant University of Denver. The College Championship Series (CCS) is a series of monthly tournaments hosted by various schools throughout the Section, which ultimately lead to the USTA Campus Championship – Florida Section in Daytona Beach.

Crandon Park offered first-class accommodations for an action packed weekend that included at least two matches and as many as seven matches in two days. In the men’s finals, Scott Runda from UF beat Sven Huber from UM 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 in a third set super tie-breaker. Inna Chepurnaya of USF defeated Sarah Gaynor of UCF 6-0, 6-0 in the women’s finals. UM players Richie Redfern and Alyssa Cance wrapped up the men’s and women’s consolation brackets respectively.

“Overall, it was a very successful tournament”, said Scott Weinreb, UM Tennis Club President and Tournament Director. “Everyone had a great time!”
